The Camp McGovern staff members are gradually entering the summer of a lifetime with both old and new friends to discover new things. This week our Kitchen staff, Leadership team, One on One staff , Counsellors and of course our new director (Surf) are all getting ready for an amazing summer, filled with alluring adventures.
After a short wait in the airport, some of the new friends and I (DJ Slides) were introduced to Spinaché, Ms Frizzle, Sprocket and the legendary camp van. Who knew the drive was going to be as lengthy as it was, but I guess it was a good way to get to know each other as well as learning everyone’s names. As we approached the CAMP MCGOVERN sign, the nerves started shooting up my spine. We slowly approached the long pathway where we were met with a ‘WELCOME HOME’ banner which gave me a warm feeling inside. Not knowing what to expect for the duration of the night, the new friends took their entire luggage to the cabins and left the main part of unpacking until later on.
Flying 3412 miles to camp meant that moving to our new home was going to be somewhat of a challenge and by challenge I mean not forgetting the simple little things like shampoo, conditioner and even a toothbrush, of which surprisingly I didn’t forget.
Anyway, let’s skip to the fun part- staff training. We started off by playing confused counsellor whereby we had to identify a potential quirk with one of the other staff members. This was quite interesting and consisted of quite a bit of running but that’s what camp is all about, being able to communicate and help each other out when it’s needed. I can’t forget about the new camp songs that we had been introduced to (by the way not all of which made sense but they were great) as well as all of the actions that we had to memorise. The creativity continued and we played netball - the tallest humans were being used as the net -improvisation is key.
There is so much to talk about, from the amazing food (Thank you Chef and Butterfly) right through to the opening camp fire where we continued to sing those crazy songs, as well as all of the different sessions that were put in place such as: Thoughts of the Day, how to deal with different behaviours, Letter to Self, Program designing, First Aid… Yes there is more but we will keep it short, in fact the terms and conditions which are very important, that was made not so daunting by the famous Pingu and Greyjoy. The training that is set out for staff is absolutely phenomenal and allows us to understand anything we may come across whether it was to do with behaviour, home sickness, First Aid, sensitive topics or anything for that matter and the different ways of dealing with it. In continuation with this topic, for our final staff training camp fire the old friends and the leadership team made personal comments to everyone on how great they have done this week and honestly it bought a tear to my eye.
It was now day two and the many different activities that we had done already and so many bonds that had been created in such a short time, you could already tell that the summer was going to be one that will not be forgotten.
But until next time, remember… A New day = A New Adventure
