Session 2 July 7 – July 13
Hello to all the McGovern Family.
Today we are welcoming our second set of campers and we cannot wait to see how well this week goes.
A little different to session 1 the counsellors alternated and had the chance to greet the campers and some of the parents to begin session 2 at the actual camp. So far this week we have gotten to know all of the campers and what they like about camp.
During the week we had a Cook out and the girls and the boys had their own little camp fires at different areas of the camp. To my surprise we used an actual stick instead of a skewer to roast a few marshmallows and hot dogs but it becomes the norm when you enter camp McGovern.
Gaga ball, dodge ball, soccer baseball; onto the sporting activities, Snooze I think we can all agree that he is the most athletic out of the staff. I only say this because he is the champion of most sporting activities we participate in such as the ones I had already stated... I'm not too sure about basketball though but what a brilliant member of the Camp he is.
It’s that time again …LIP SYNC BATTLE!!!!!!!
The last lip sync battle we had was the one in staff training and I can tell you that they were both absolutely brilliant. We have a costume closet with all kinds of costumes inside of it. With our presenter Spinaché, judges: Maple, Orca and Marmalade (MOM) and contestants being the rest of the camp you would have thought they were already professionals. A prime example is when Stamp appeared out of nowhere with a green face shouting …. ‘Get out of my swamp’ now we all know where we are going with this! She was the female version of Shrek. What a night it was though, 2 hours of pure entertainment.
Every week we have a tie dye session and this week Pollen, Spinaché and Stamp took charge of this program and we had so many different designs: Spiral, Bullseye and we had a camper that had created a turtle shaped design. We’re still yet to find an activity that is messier than this one.
This is where the campers are allowed to go swimming in the river that is just at the bottom of the playing field. The super clear water allowed the campers to explore the different fish and the rocks that could be seen. As well as time to swim the campers if they didn’t want to swim could play cards, play some sporting games such as basketball which was very popular this week. Right after the swimming time there was a snack where we had popsicles or ice cream sandwiches and in the hot weather this was the perfect way to cool us down.
It's the final day of camp and emotions are running high but we made it through the week and ended with a positive outcome! We started the day off with the normal routine 'wake up, breakfast and our favourite... sparkle time.
After the morning routine the different cabins had different activities to participate in and our first activity was low ropes and what a great team we had. We were able to balance when whale watching and surprisingly it didn't take us long to get balanced. Our next activity was a game called the human knot it took us a while but we had completed it eventually. High ropes were next and the campers that climbed, walked across the catwalk with help from Pingu at the bottom.
Oh yes I can’t forget… lunch time, spaghetti Bolognese just another great meal from the kitchen staff. Thank you to Chef, DJ Slides and Butterfly for the amazing food all week.
After filling our stomachs with food we moved onto canoeing and swimming straight after, although the water was freezing cold it was such a good way to communicate with other members of the group.
This week was another successful week and I hope that everyone has enjoyed their time at camp and I hope you all have a great summer and until next time … Follow your own directions to discover a new place.
Session 1 June 30-July 3
So let’s kick start the blog with Gooooood day to all of our Camp McGovern family!
Campers have finally arrived!!!
What a way to start the summer. To begin with we had a short week but what a fun short week it was. We started with an hour and a half journey on a school bus where we were getting ready to greet the campers.
When we arrived and the campers had got settled we played soccer Baseball, I mean its not necessarily a game that I am familiar with but it’s definitely a game that I would play again.
The first day was a great one but we all know that at some point Spinaché was going to pop up with the camera for our cabin photos and we needed to be prepared for when she did. Of course everybody had to have their hair done to perfection. We were all asked to take a photo where we had cheesy grins and another photo where we pulled a silly face; this one was given out as one of the many memories of camp.
There are so many activities that can be done at Camp McGovern and one of the activities’ that the campers love is… tie dye!!! It’s definitely one of if not the messiest activity but the outcome is amazing. Spinaché,Stamp and Squeaky taught both the campers and some of the councillors how to tie Dye. Everybody did a great job.
Every day is different when it comes to meal time we go from singing 'Moose, Alpaca, Moose, Moose, Alpaca, Unicorn' to eating food with no utensils... no it's not as easy as it seems but that's what makes Camp a great place to be.
In the morning after competing with everybody outside the hall man to get inside first, after everybody has eaten breakfast, our Archery chief Pollen shouts ... What's our favourite time of the day? The whole of the Hallman screamed SPARKLE TIMEEEEE, this is where the different cabins are given different places to tidy/ clean.
As the end of session one is quickly approaching I think that the councillors can admit that they have a routine of questions repeating in their brains ... 'Are you wearing sun cream?' 'Have you got your water bottle' 'Have you got your towel?' 'Have I got my fanny pack?' Oh the list goes on.
Final campfire is here, the time had come and we he had to say fair well to our first group of campers. At this campfire the campers had the opportunity to say their thank yous to their councillors and good bye to their new friends. This year we have introduced a new program, creative writing which is ran by DJ Slides and at the end of the camp fire a poem is written about how the campers feel about camp and what they loved about it. A few of the campers sang and played the instruments to a song they had learned in their music class which is ran by Sorbét.
Every camper has done so well this week!
I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer but until next time… Open closed doors to discover new adventures.
